History of the Chicagoland Affiliate The Chicagoland Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1997 with the first Komen Chicago Race for the CureŽ held that same year.
With the support of our signature fundraiser, the Komen Chicago Race for the CureŽ the Komen Chicagoland Affiliate has awarded $7 million towards the fight against breast cancer by funding grassroots breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects, as well as national research. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Affiliate are dedicated to fighting breast cancer locally in the Chicago metropolitan area. Grants are awarded each year to local hospitals and community organizations that provide innovative outreach and awareness programs for medically underserved women. Twenty-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Affiliate support the Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. The generosity and spirit of our corporate sponsors and community partners enables the Affiliate to organize the Komen Chicago Race for the CureŽ and additional breast cancer awareness events and fundraisers throughout the year.
